Four Online Writing Sites Where Non-Professionals Can Actually Make Money
80By Lisa Kroulik © April 23, 2011
I entered the world of online writing two months ago through Hub Pages, and it wasn't long before I began wondering how I could make a living at this. The seed had been planted and the desire wasn't going away, so I devoted one week to searching out and writing for sites where I could earn enough money to make it my job. I found four such sites and am happy to share the results of my one-week experiment with you.
These sites are primarily copy writing for clients requesting specific content. It's the kind of writing you do to pay the bills and not necessarily to express yourself. However, writing is writing in my book and any day that I can stay home and get paid to do what I love is a good day for me. I will present my reviews in the order that I began working for the websites.
London Brokers
To begin writing for London Brokers, you just need to sign up and confirm that you are a native English speaker. This is an absolute requirement and they will close any account that does not comply with it. Once you have confirmed your account, you may go to the Bulletin Board to look for articles that you may be interested in writing. You will find the title, payment and due date listed alongside the article topic.
London Brokers makes payment through PayPal or other online payment websites every Friday as long as your balance is at least $10. I have received one payment from them of $20.96.
The vast majority of article requests on London Brokers require you to write the same article three different ways. They refer to this as UAW. In addition, every client will request certain keywords to be used at certain points in the article, usually within the first sentence.
The pay at London Brokers is lower than any other site I have written for and I have found writing UAW articles to be extremely time-consuming. Once I discovered that it took me 2.5 hours to make $6.00, I quickly moved on to other sites.
One year later 4/23/12: I have not written anything else for this website.
Textbroker
The sign-up process on Textbroker is a bit more stringent than London Brokers. After you fill out the required forms, you will be asked to submit a short writing sample based on a question of their choosing. The question I answered involved describing my ideal vacation spot. Your writing sample is then evaluated and you are assigned a rating from 2 to 4, which determines the number and quality of assignments available to you. I was initially rated at a 3, but moved to a 4 within one week. A rating of 5 is generally reserved for professional journalists and requires passing a proofreading test.
Article requests are divided by category and rating. Each client will list instructions. After you have submitted the article, the client has the option of accepting it immediately or requesting revisions. Of the 95 articles I have submitted to Textbroker, only three have come back requesting revision because I did not fully understand the directions the first time.
Payment rates at level 3 are around one cent per word and at level 4 that moved up to about 1.5 cents per word. You can request a payment from Textbroker once your account has a minimum balance of $10.00. They pay via PayPal only around the 5th and 20th of each month. My first payment from them was for $358.38 and was received in a very timely manner. I am very impressed with Textbroker so far and will continue to make them the primary place I write online.
One year later 4/23/12: Textbroker is still the primary place I write online. They have made a number of upgrades, which I detail in my "Even More Benefits of Textbroker" listed below. From 3/28/11 to 4/23/12, I have completed 4,888 articles and earned over $23,000.
Yahoo! Contributor Network
YCN has a lot to offer creative people of all stripes. You can submit articles, audio, images, slide shows and video and earn revenue based on the number of page views your content receives in any give month. YCN includes Associated Content and Yahoo! News, Sports, Finance, Local, TV, Movies and other partner sites. The articles that I have written for Associated Content and Yahoo! Sports already have close to 4,000 page views in the three weeks that I have been a member.
No writing test is required to sign up for YCN, although all content goes through an approval process before it is published. You may submit an article of your choosing or select one from the Assignment Desk, which sometimes involves receiving an upfront payment as well as performance pay. I have written six articles from the Assignment Desk that have received upfront payment ranging from $3 to $4, all of which I received via PayPal within one day of the article being published. Performance payments are made on the second Wednesday of each month.
One year later 4/23/12: I have not written for YCN since June 2011. I see very few upfront pay articles there anymore.
eCopywriters
This is a new site that I have only written one article for, but it looks interesting so I am including it in this list. The sign-up process is similar to Textbroker in that you submit a writing sample based on a question they choose and are then assigned a quality level which determines pay and type of assignments available. My initial quality rating is a 2 and that also goes up to 5.
The pay rates at eCopywriters are the best that I have seen. Even starting at a level 2, I am making two cents per word, as opposed to Textbroker where it is approximately 1.5 cents per word at level 4. The rates go as high as five cents per word at level 5. There is a level 6 and 7, but I am assuming these are for professional journalists. The type of writing involved seems to be heavy in writing to specific keywords which can make it more challenging. Their FAQ section states it takes approximately three to four weeks of consistent writing to move up a level.
eCopywriters pays on the 1st and 15th of every month via PayPal. I have only earned $6.40 there so far and have not received a payment yet.
One year later 4/23/12: I have completed 399 articles in 13 months with eCopywriters and earned approximately $2,500.
Taxes
One thing to keep in mind when writing online content is that you are considered an independent contractor and will be responsible for filing your own taxes. Each company will send you a form 1099 if your earnings in a year are over $600. If you plan to do this as your line of work, you will also need to make arrangements with the IRS to make estimated quarterly payments for social security taxes.

Awesome article! Very useful! Printing this one for future reference.
This is a very useful article. If I am forced to retire from teaching next year, I would like to go into writing.
Great resources! And these were new to me! Thank you! Article writers will always be needed in the internet world. A skill worth developing for sure!
Had you submitted this hub as a writing sample I am sure you would have begun at even higher pay rates right away. This was well done and very informative. I will bookmark this article and look further into these opportunities soon.
Thanks for sharing.

What an interesting and useful article! Thanks for sharing you finds with us!
Thank you, nybride710 :) You're a sweetheart for sharing. Useful and awesome.
Love & Light,

I was very disappointed to find out that some of the sites mentioned here are only for U.S. citizens, yes, even Yahoo! I am giving eCopywriter a try now to see how I go.
I'll be looking for your part 2!
Hi, thanks for a very informative hub! When I came to HP 7 months ago, I loved it, but the rules changed and I haven't even had a payout yet. I want to stay for the fun part, writing about what I like, but even though hubbers say they have so many backlinks, I'm looking on sites and many have strict rules about putting any URL's on their sites. I can only think they put hours in to get followers, then slip their links to their hubs in what seems like a personal online conversation.
I am really intrigued by the textbroker... while I have some free time, I think I am going to go check that and eCopywriter out. Thanks for the suggestions.
Great article, Lisa. I'm a Textbroker author, too. I started out at Level 4 and have maintained that rating...but no direct orders yet. I'm happy to hear that you're now working directly with some of the clients. I was YCN writer years ago, when it was Associated Content. I'll be sure to check out the other sites, too.
What a great hub! I have bookmarked this for reference and just applied for a writing job with eCopywriter. I have my fingers crossed!
I just signed up for Textbroker and I have to say... it is difficult to get my feet wet. I am looking at all these assignments and I am breaking a cold sweat. Maybe my confidence is shaken by the deadline, or being on unfamiliar terms with what is going on. I look forward to your part too so I can feel a little more at ease with the site. I submitted 2 so far and I am waiting for acceptance or reworks. Thanks for any tips you can suggest!
Ok - so here is another question. Which topics do you aim toward. I was looking at the stuff that they are listing and I don't even know what I am qualified for. Do you have any tips for the topics you choose. I think that is the hardest part. I don't want to open them and then realize it is way beyond me. I am usually a pretty confident writer, but writing in the unknown has shaken me a bit. However, I did make $5 yesterday if both get approved so that was more in one day than in the first 3 months with adsense. Can't really complain!
Thanks for sharing! I know that we have tons of content writing websites but I was unsure which ones are good. Your reviews have certainly helped in deciding which ones to go for. And now I realise that there are actually more ways to earn from writing articles.
Thanks for the help. ONe of the first ones I tried didn't give a whole lot of direction. But, I tried it anyway to see what would happen. They ended up needing a revision, but I don't think it was too bad for first jumping in. I am still getting the hang of it. I was looking at kids and family and some of the stuff doesn't even seem related to the topic. So, I got a little curious as to what I was qualified to write for! LOL Thanks again.
I'm new and I think you did very well.
This is only the third hub I've read.
The hub's quality is connection.
Your personal experience lets us get in touch with is useful. Way to go!
Awesome resources! I am looking to start more freelance writing once this school year is over. I will definitely check out Textbroker. Thanks!
I'm tired of saying I'm going to get into freelance writing and not doing anything. Reading your article inspired me and I'm going to try London Broker. Wish me luck!
I am also bookmarking this and will be referring back to it. Thanks!
Thank you for this information. I am always looking for ways to write more
I absolutely love Textbroker. They're a great site.
Great and useful article. How did you crank out 95 articles in such a short amount of time? Voted up!
Thanks so much for this excellent information. Voted up and very useful.
I just wanted to come back and say thanks for the great site... I have already finished my first 5 articles and have made about (as long as they are all accepted) $18. Now that is just a drop in the hate but it is a great start. However, now they have to rate the first 5 articles I wrote - how long did that take you?
Thanks for the information... sorry to keep bugging you about it. I am giving textbroker a try first and see what that can bring in. I also signed up for ecopywriter but I am waiting confirmation back from them so I can apply for jobs. I don't want to stretch myself too thin.
Your article might be just what I am looking for. I am still gathering infomation and then will decide. Thanks for doing the leg work for me.
Thanks so much for this information I will definitely check them out!
Another excellent and very informative hub.
I liked the article.Nicely written. Thanks for the information.
As I am looking to write full time, this iformation is most helpful. Thank you!!
this is an unbelievable hub. all these sites Ihave never heard about before.Tanks for the great info.
Heres another way of making money online you might want to check out. http://hubpages.com/hub/how-to-make-money-from-cli
This information is very helpful! My mom and I are wanting to write online part-time and I was wondering if you think Textbroker is doable for a person working a separate full-time job. Would I still have time to complete the articles and see a significant amount of money roll in just doing it part-time?
Awesome resources. Thanks for writing!
I'd like to add my thanks for publishing these sites. Like you, I've been on Hub Pages 4 months and have published 35 hubs. Hub Pages does keep your writing skills honed and creative juices going, but I'm also seeking a way to earn more from my writing.
Again, thank you.
Bookmarking this! Thanks for sharing your hard work and experience with us, you are a gem!
Thanks for sharing your experiences! Nice article.
Good hub. Londonbrokers screwed me over though and didn't pay me $80 they owed me. I don't recommend it because of their low payments too.
Voted up and useful.
Hello. I found this hub to be very useful as I just started looking into online writing. I went to one of the websites (eCopywriter) listed above and I could not find the sign up form. It could be from my lack of knowledge on how some of these websites work, who knows?! But this hub was very informative, thank you for writing it. :)
Read this after checking out your hub about earning $2k last month...very informative!
Bookmarked! ... Hi Lisa. Thanks for the list.
Good information, I have limited time for hubbing but I really enjoy the writing aspect of it and sharing information. I have so much to learn, thanks for the info!
Thank you for one of the most helpful hubs on this topic! Excellent! Vote Up!
You must be one of the lucky ones. I've been a 3 for textbroker since I started but every topic I choose says there are no jobs for my rating. Very disappointing.
Thanks for your article. Have you since gotten paid by eCopywriter?
Very informative and helpful hub.I also found this hub to be very useful as I just started looking into online writing.Reading your article inspired me so much. You are great.
do you have to earn a certain amount yearly before submitting quarterly payments to IRS?? How does that work, you're basically my idol right now haha so i'm absorbing all you have to say!!
Thanks, nybride. I am on textbrokers already. Will check out the other ones... God I love hubpages. Always so much information out there. Thank you!
awesome, thank you!
Bride, this is a great article and I will be bookmarking it for further reference. I have not tried any of these sites, but I will look into them. Right now, I am signed up for Constant Content and Content Authority. I have also just started writing for Triond and WebNuggetz.
I will definitely be looking into the ones that you have mentioned, and would love to hear of more of your experience. Thanks for sharing!
I want to mention that my experience with London Brokers was not good. I had two issues.
One was that they claim that they will review your submission and get back to you generally in ~24 hours. I found that they usually took 5 days so you cannot do anything in the meantime.
Additionally, my latest article was rejected, but then I googled it and found it all over the net. So then I googled London Brokers and found that many people have had similar problems. I would avoid them.
I'm just curious nybride, were you comfortable in sending textbroker a w2? I'm kinda nervous when it comes to doing that.
very, very good information here, nybride. I think I'll hop over to textbroker. i came from your other hub and see that textbroker has been very kind to you! Thanks for passing on the useful info.
THANK YOU for this article. I have been writing for the first one mentioned and made about $100 but I agree, lots of work for a little money.
By the way- your hub was taken and placed elsewhere. http://www.bestincomesource.net/2011/four-online-w
I can't find a site for ecopywriter, but there is an ecopywriters (with an s on the end). Is that the one you're using? Thanks.
Thanks bride for this article. Very informative. A little sad though because most of these sites prefer writers from the UK, USA etc leaving out people like me from East Africa. Any idea that accepts African writers and pays well? I am new in this game but believe in my creativity.
This one is definitely a keeper as well. Again, many thanks for sharing your personal experience.
This is really interesting websites
I could also add Demand Studios to the list, but you now have to be an expert in a certain field to get a good quantity of work. I have written for textbroker also.
You outlined your hub very nicely, and it made for easy reading.
well done for this effort its really eye opening, my challenge is the requirement that writers must be resident in U.S or Canada, guess its have a good grasp on the age thing. Are there sites where i can write as an african fro Abuja, Nigeria.
This was a very informative article. Good luck in your writing endeavors.
Hi everyone, Give these two newcomers a try:
CloudCrowd (http://www.cloudcrowd.com/i/9iurr2) is a growing content production and management site. After you pass a few tests to determine your skill level, you can then get paid to write, edit, research, etc. The pay is comparable to Texbroker and some other sites--sometimes higher.
It's actually a Facebook app. The interface is clean; the workflow is organized, and if you finish some tasks today, you get paid through PayPal tomorrow!
The other one is MediaPiston (http://www.mediapiston.com)
Awesome updates. You are the success story of the newbie who finds a writing job online nybride. I am very happy you have found a measure of success. I have been wanting to ask you for awhile, how do you pick jobs for textbroker. I worked and made about 250 bucks from them once but anymore when I check the job board, they have weird names for their jobs, and lots of topics I know nothing about.
nybride, this is the first time I'm learning about these sites! Do they accept writers from India?
Very useful hub. Voted up.
Thanks for the updates I really enjoy your information. Time to get some serious writing done, thanks.
Yet another awesome hub here, I'm interested in the Text broker writers network, and joined the Yahoo one just to give it a try as you've done. Thanks for the very useful info here it has helped me in a huge way, and I hope to be earning soon as you've also done. Voted up and out!
I can't thank you enough for writing this. I will be checking out several of these sites soon. Take care, Kelley
This is great information. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. I am impressed with the number of articles you have written. I have trouble just popping out two a week. Do you have any advice to help increase writing production? Thanks, in advance, for any information you have to share.
nybride,
This article is a godsend!! I'm so glad that I stumbled upon it. I need to make serious money asap, since hubby was recently diagnosed with cancer and lost his job. I have no problem being the earner, as long as I can be effective at it. Thank you so so much for this information!!!
